Commonwealth's Attorney

The commonwealth’s attorney, also known as the district attorney in other states, prosecutes crimes committed in King George County, including all felonies and most misdemeanors. The prosecution takes place in three courts: (1) juvenile and domestic relations court, (2) general district court & (3) circuit court. 

Commonwealth’s attorneys have numerous other duties and responsibilities as set forth in the Virginia Constitution and Code of Virginia. 

The commonwealth’s attorney also administers the victim/witness program and partners with many other agencies to provide the most effective prosecution and service to crime victims and witnesses. The commonwealth’s attorney closely works with law enforcement agencies, especially the King George Sheriff’s Office and the Virginia State Police.

Responsibilities

The commonwealth's attorney's office annually prosecutes crimes committed in King George County. Funding is through the commonwealth, county & grants with the federal government. The commonwealth's attorney's office also maintains an active internship program that provides real-world experience to those interested in law prosecution and provides much-needed help to the office.

The office uses the most effective and up-to-date technology and courtroom procedures to ensure that all crimes supported by the law and evidence are successfully prosecuted. During the current attorney's tenure, the office has successfully prosecuted thousands of crimes and obtained some of the largest sentences in Virginia history, in cases ranging from homicide, drug distribution, sex crimes & property crime.

Goals

  • Providing respectful and appropriate treatment and assistance to victims of and witnesses to crime. 
  • Participation and creation of programs to prevent crime and to inform the public about the law.
