About Us

The King George County Sheriff's Office is a full-service, state-accredited law enforcement agency. View below some of the duties that our deputies perform.

Patrol Division

The Patrol Division is the most visible entity of the Sheriff's Office.  Shifts of uniformed deputies patrol the county 24 hours a day.  Their duties include enforcing traffic laws, serving criminal warrants, responding to calls-for-service from the public, conducting preliminary investigations, and being first responders to major crimes.  K-9 Operations also falls within this division.  The dedicated men and women of this division are true law enforcement professionals who stand prepared and vigilant to protect and serve our community.

The Criminal Investigation Division is comprised of detectives who are extensively trained in all aspects of criminal investigations and are responsible for investigating all major crimes. Criminal offenses requiring follow-up investigation, subsequent to the patrol deputies' initial response, also become the responsibility of the CID. Certain detectives have been specifically trained to investigate narcotics-related crimes, sex crimes, gang-related crimes and property crimes.

E911 Communications Division

The Sheriff's Office is manned around the clock, answering calls-for-service for law enforcement, fire and emergency medical services, and animal control.  E911 Communications Officers are the heroes behind the scenes and often the first contact for the public to receive help in case of an emergency.  The EOC (Emergency Operations Center) is equipped with a state-of-the-art CAD (Computer Aided Dispatch) system, a Computer Automated Mapping system, and Enhanced 911, which allows Communications Officers to immediately find the address from which a 911 call is made, in the event the caller is unable to provide that information.

The Administrative/Records Management Division converts arrest and incident-based report data to computer records. In addition, traffic citations, civil process information and FOIA requests are processed through this office.

The Sheriff’s Office Court Services Division has the responsibility of protecting the presiding judges and maintaining an orderly courtroom, as well as transporting prisoners to and from other jurisdictions. Members of this division are also the primary servers of civil process, which includes subpoenas and summonses.

The Professional Standards Division is comprised of hiring, training, accreditation, public information, and internal affairs.  This division is responsible for conducting hiring processes, scheduling and managing training for sworn and civilian staff, ensuring compliance with the accreditation standards set forth by the Virginia Law Enforcement Professional Standards Commission, maintaining effective media relations and reviewing/retaining internal affairs investigations.

It is the responsibility of this division to test and select only the highest caliber and most qualified professional personnel to serve our community as a King George Sheriff's Office sworn or civilian employee. Selected candidates will become members of one of the most highly respected law enforcement agencies in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

King George Sheriff's Office is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

Special Response Team

The mission of the Special Response Team is to support the Sheriff's Office with a tactical response to critical incidents, examples of which may be barricaded persons, hostage situations, and high-risk warrant service. As is the case with any division of the Sheriff's Office, the successful and safe resolution of any incident is paramount. Team members train, continually, in the use of special weapons and tactics so that they are well prepared for situations that cannot be effectively dealt with by regular patrol deputies.

Crisis Negotiation Team

The Crisis Negotiation Team responds to critical incidents that require the need for focused communication and negotiation.  Team members are trained to respond effectively to situations involving hostages or barricaded/suicidal subjects.  Team members undergo intense training, which includes in-house exercises and attending regional and national courses and seminars.  The CNT works closely with the Special Response Team to safely resolve critical incidents.  The team uses specialized equipment, including a mobile command vehicle and advanced communication equipment, to perform their tasks.

Bike Patrol Unit

The Sheriff's Office Bike Patrol Team consists of deputies who have volunteered for this specialized training. Bike Patrol provides a unique patrol resource, in that deputies can reach otherwise difficult areas. Bike Patrol deputies are often able to meet citizens in a more personable atmosphere. Team members, generally, ride 10-15 miles per shift and also conduct programs aimed at promoting bicycle safety, bicycle maintenance, and helmet use.

The Marine Patrol Unit is responsible for law enforcement, search and rescue and environmental protection on waterways and coastal areas. Their primary functions include: patrolling waterways, conducting search and rescue operations, responding to boating accidents and water-based emergencies and supporting environmental and wildlife enforcement efforts.

The K-9 Unit utilizes highly trained police dogs and handlers to support various law enforcement duties, where the dogs' keen senses provide critical advantages. Their primary functions include: detecting narcotics, tracking suspects or missing persons, searching buildings and vehicles and aiding in suspect apprehension.

Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Unit

The Drone Unit utilizes unmanned aerial systems (UAS) to provide real-time aerial mapping. Their primary functions include: performing aerial surveillance for search and rescue, crowd monitoring and suspect pursuit, reconstructing crime scenes and accidents with aerial imagery, performing disaster response and damage assessment and confirming perimeter security.

Honor/Color Guard

The Honor/Color Guard attends memorial or funeral services to recognize fallen officers. At times, the participating deputies also perform in parades, opening ceremonies, and graduations. The team consists of two guards bearing rifles and three color bearers.

School Resource Officer (SRO)

School Resource Officers are currently assigned to the county's high school and middle school. These uniformed deputies work closely with the school administration, helping to provide students with a positive learning environment.

D.A.R.E

The Sheriff's Office is an active participant in the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program and has been offering the instruction since 1989. DARE is a collaboration between law enforcement and the local school system. During the 17-week course, deputies speak to students in the school classroom about the pressures to experiment with drugs. Students are given the knowledge that will help them recognize and resist these pressures. The DARE program also focuses on positive alternatives to violence and drug abuse.

Forensic Unit

The Forensic Unit responds to all major crime scenes. Members of this unit have received specialized training in the identification of evidence, as well as the collection and preservation of such evidence. Physical or forensic evidence is submitted to the Division of Forensic Science for analysis. The Forensic Unit members are also skilled in the documentation of crime scenes, which includes the photography and sketching of scenes.
